“I connected with the essence of traditional architecture from a very young age.”
Originating from Sandusky, Ohio, known as “The Rollercoaster Capital of the World,” Britt was surrounded by design from a young age. His father, an architect who played a key role in designing many of Sandusky's rollercoasters, fostered Britt's early passion for architecture. “Growing up, I was immersed in the world of design,” Britt recalls from his uniquely inspiring studio in downtown Santa Barbara.
“Santa Barbara’s unique spatial dynamics and natural beauty were unlike anything I’d ever seen, I knew I wanted to build my life and career here.”
Initially pursuing optometry at Ohio State, Britt quickly realized his true calling lay elsewhere. After a close call in the chemistry lab, he shifted his focus to architecture, ultimately earning his degree in the field. A trip to California for the Rose Bowl in 1985 changed his life forever. Within a month, Britt had relocated to the Golden State, drawn by the region's stunning beauty. He first settled in Orange County but soon found his way to Santa Barbara, captivated by its serene landscapes and seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living.
“I strive to merge these timeless characteristics with the conveniences of modern living.”
Britt's architectural style elegantly combines traditional structures with modern living, creating spaces that are both familiar and functional. “While the designs of the past may not always suit today’s lifestyle, there’s a comfort in traditional elements that make a home feel grounded,” he says.
“That project was one of the most intricate and rewarding I’ve ever worked on.”
Throughout his career, Britt has demonstrated a wide range of skills, from designing a TED Talk stage and the opening scene for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival to renovating the historic Santa Barbara Hall of Records. His projects span from expansive estates to intimate renovations, showcasing his versatility and creativity. One notable commission involved designing a home specifically around a cherished art collection, where he also crafted custom furniture and display pieces to complement the artwork.
